Routines...they really do work!

So, sometimes with Chunk I feel like a new mom all over again. I suppose I can say that with all of my Goobers when they do something new.

You would think though after being a mom for 10 years, I would have gotten the memo about sleep routines sooner.

Yeaaaaaah.

Just got it last week.

Well, let me correct that. I got it way back when. But when you work in a restaurant or in retail, you don't exactly have 'routine' hours. So it was hard.

Being home almost all of the time now though let me finally give it a shot, so we did last week.

We started with Chunk since he is the littlest. Backtracking a bit here, we took him out of the crib and into a pack n play because the big kids decided they were going to climb into the crib and play with him and bent one of the metal things that allows you to set the height of the mattress. Then when he was super sick we moved him into bed with us because we were using a nebulizer on a very strict schedule, including through the night , and it was just easier to do it when he was sleeping then wake him up for it. We tried to go back to the crib when he got better and we got the replacement piece, but he would scream. I've let my kids cry it out at bedtime before but this kid will scream for hours. Seriously. So we were stuck with him in bed.

Then he started daycare in September. And after a few days, he would go down for naps in the pack n play there. So I had the brilliant idea last week to pull out the pack n play at naptime and give it a shot. He whined for a few minutes but took his nap. Same at bedtime. Yay! Now he goes down for his nap no problems...and as long as we keep the big kids downstairs, bedtime is a breeze for him too.

Even The Chef yesterday was surprised that when they put Cute Boy on the bus that Chunk came home and laid down on the couch and took a nap. I was at a meeting and told him the routine, but you know how men and listening skills can be sometimes.

So since I was excited about the success with Chunk, I moved on to the big kids. Sweet Nut wasn't much of a problem, as long as no one bugs him, he's always been the best sleeper of the 3...but he can't have anyone awake near him or he turns into a clown. Cute Boy surprisingly has gotten better. It still takes him awhile to go to sleep, but he does. Spawn still takes for.ever.

The biggest thing with them is that since they all share a room, we have to wait until one is asleep before sending spin the next. So bedtime takes awhile. The plan is one day to at least have 3 bedrooms, one for us, and then split the boys between 2 rooms so we can send the little ones at the same time and once they are asleep, send the big ones. Unfortunately, that is probably going to take us moving out of the area, or hitting lotto. Rent is just crazy expensive here. One day though, it gives us something to work towards.

They work hard for their money...

So hard for their money.

Ok. I'll stop singing now.

Anyways, we're 3 weeks into our new allowance/chore system and its going surprisingly well!

I mentioned in my last post that we've been trying to figure out the whole chore mystery for years.

Thanks to Pinterest, I found a lot of different systems that people we using. But none of them really worked for us. Then I had the brilliant idea to combine a little of this with a little of that and lo and behold, we got a keeper.

The boys like it because they aren't stuck doing the same old thing all the time and I like it because I'm not nagging...as much.

So let me walk you through a Sunday afternoon at our house.

After lunch we pull these out:

 photo image_zps1a2f6092.jpg

 photo image_zps9deaf3ba.jpg

That's our chore box and our family bank binder.

They take turns pulling chores. Each of them gets 5. And the chores a mix of things that have to be done every day and once or twice a week.

We jot down who has what...and every once in awhile there's a trade worked out between brothers. Then we pull their log charts. These are up on the fridge and they get marked each day when something is done. We add up what they earned- daily chores are worth 25 cents. Weekly chores are worth 50 cents. We add them up and they write down what they earned in their bank register as chore payout.

 photo image_zpse40df8a1.jpg

Then they either work with Mom using the calculator to figure out what 20% is, or Spawn gets a piece of paper and does the multiplication by hand. This money goes into their savings. They can't touch their savings. (Eventually when they get enough saved they'll go with MaMa (my mom) to open a savings account.). The rest is theirs to save or spend. Right now we have them convinced to save for our Disney trip.

Starting tomorrow, we're getting rid of the check sheets and making it electronic. I found today (thanks Pinterest!) a website called MyJobChart.com. We played with it today and it is pretty awesome!

 photo image_zps17f5e422.jpg

You set up your account and then add your kids and assign them jobs. They earn points rather than money (each point is equal to 1 cent) and you can set what the jobs are worth. You can set rewards they can earn, there are general ones and they also link to Amazon, so you can put a specific toy or something (right now theirs are filled with skylanders.)

After the kids earn their points they go to their store where they can organize their points to savings, organizations to give to and rewards. Once they feel they have enough points in one of those sections, they can 'spend' it, which emails you to let you know what they want, so you can either put it in the bank, donate, or buy it.

 photo image_zps24073304.jpg

So far the boys like it, I figured they would, because its electronic. We have it linked on the iPad so they can just click and open it. Once they do that they click their picture and enter their password to get into their account.

So thats's how we have chores worked out.

Allowance is a whole different animal. We started this month giving them a dollar for their age, so for example, Spawn got $10. Again, they have to save 20% of that. We're actually going to start tweaking this too this coming month. A friend of mine does this with her boys and we're going to give it a shot as well. The goal is to correct behavior and have them behave, but also to make you look for the good and compliment the positive. There's a mason jar for each kid and a jar of marbles/stones. Each time they get caught doing something good, you compliment them and add a stone to their jar. At the end of the month a full jar is worth $10. They can't lose stones, because remember, you are trying to be positive. She says since they started it she's noticed a change, so I'm anxious to see if it works on Goobers as well.

So far so good.

Just a note. Although I talked a lot about MyJobChart.com, they don't know who I am or that I wrote this. I just found it and thought it was neat and wanted to share. Best part is that it's free...well, the site is free...the kids will eventually expect money :)

Cha-cha-cha-changes.

So here we are, the beginning of another New Year...and we're making lots of changes!

First, if you read the last post you know we're working on building our savings. It's been a rough few weeks but the budget is in place and we're starting to use it.

Second is food wise. I desperately need to lose weight as I've watched it get closer and closer to a super scary number. One day I'll share but not yet. Spawn, Sweet Nut and The Chef can stand to shed some pounds as well. I decided to dive in head first with meal planning. This is our first full week and so far so good. I made the menu on Saturday and went shopping Sunday. The plan is to make at least a weeks worth of menus (ideally I'd like to do the whole month, but I have to work up to that) and to shopping once a week. There are times where I'm in the grocery store once a day or more, and we start buying junk food we don't need just because its there. By forcing myself to only go once a week, I'm hoping it helps keep the junk food out. We're also trying some new recipes and we're going to be adding some sort of salad or raw veggie platter to the menu every day starting next week.

Our other big change is our new chore payout/allowance system. I've been looking for a new system for awhile and I've taken some components of what I've read and made up one that so far works for us. Each Sunday the big 3 draw 5 chores out of a box. Those are their chores for the week. We list them on the fridge next to their check sheets. Each Sunday before we draw new chores we have chore payout. Then on the first Sunday of the month, we give them their allowance...$1 for each year they have been alive. We're on our second week and its going pretty well.

And one of the big reasons for our new system is that we are planning to head down to the House of Mouse at the end of April. Yep, we're heading down for a week at Disney. So we've told the boys that they can certainly spend the money now, we strongly recommend to save it for Disney, because we are not giving them money. And it's been working.

So that's what's been going on around here. Oh and Spawn hit the big ole 10!!! Chunk was getting over the flu so we just needed the wheelchair.

Hope the New Year is treating you well so far...what resolutions or changes are happening with you?

Attack of the Germs.

It's been a rough weekend.

Spawn brought home pinkeye on Thursday.  Then Sweet Nut got sick at field day.  Then Chunk got a nasty cough and fever all weekend.  Oh and Sweet Nut got pink eye on Saturday.

The big ones are doing better.  Chunk is still pretty rough.  The dr upped his albuterol to every 4 hours, and he's also on prednisone and antibiotics.  We go back in the morning.

I'm hoping this combo of meds work.  Momma hasn't gotten a good night sleep in 3 nights now.  Chef traded missing his soccer game so I could go to a meeting tonight for on call duty tonight.  I know I'll still be up though.

We go back to the dr to get rechecked in the morning.  Fun times in the goober house.

Why hullo there.

I know, I've been neglectful.

We've been busy here.  School, work and battling germs.  You know the usual things in a family with 4 goobers.

On with the updating!

Spawn:  We're still dealing with problems in school.  Our ped wants the school to evaluate him to see if meds would help.  His teacher thinks he's doing ok without them.  Although we have been getting notes home about behavior.  He's doing better, but is still just below where he should be.  Chef and I have been talking, as well as some conversations with Spawn, we're going to be pulling him after he finishes 3rd grade this year to homeschool.  We're in the process of going through different materials and figuring out what will work best for us.

Otherwise, he is doing pretty good.  He loves helping with Baby Goober and often disappears to hide and read...he says as long as he hides that his brothers can't find him and make him read to them.  He does love to read to them, but I get needing some time to read alone.

Healthwise, we had another long function test a few weeks ago.  The last one, they upped his inhaler to 2 puffs 2x a day.  While his lung finction isn't perfect, he did the best on the test that he's ever done since we started back in July.  They're keeping him on the same regimin for now, and he goes back in March for another check.

Sweet Nut:  Loves first grade.  He finished all 120 sight words before Christmas and is working on the second list now.  He moved up in reading again, I'm not sure where he is because by the time I figure it out, he's moved up again, LOL.  He has a love/hate relationship with Math.  Depends on the day.  And he's loving spelling.  I'm not sure where we got this kid!

Healthwise, he's been the healthiest of the bunch.  He's taken it upon himself to watch what he eats...he's been watching me.  He's been picking fruits and veggies over other snacks and drinks a TON of water.

Cute Boy:  Loves his prek.  I love that it's not as harsh as the one Sweet Nut went to.  It's a daycare run in a private home, but she has it scheduled day like a prek.  He's looking forward to turning 5 in less than 2 weeks.

Healthwise, he's been pretty good...a bit of a fever ad cold a few weeks ago that knocked him down for a bit, but nothing major.

Baby Goober:  Is almost 9 months old...and I'm wondering where the time went!  He's thisclose to crawling, although he's got the army crawl down, and he's pretty fast.  He's got 4 teeth now, and he's loving food.  And he's got the Mama down when he feels he needs attention or something isn't going his way.

Healthwise, he's been battling a cold.  Even with that though, the last time we were at the doctors he said that Baby Goober's lungs sound better than they have in months!  Yay!  He's still on the nebulizer 2x a day for his pulmicort with albuterol as he needs it, and we haven't used any albuterol in over a month!  Yay!

As for me, thigns have been ok.  I've moved up at work to marketing director.  It's perfect because I'm dealig with graphics which I love, and I can do it from the office or from home.  It's played a big part in our decision to homeschool Spawn.

We're also heading back to Catholicism.  It's been a big decision for me, but it's the right one.  So right now, I'm in the process of getting some things ready to teach the boys about Lent.

Anyways, that's what's been going on here...I'll be posting some of the Lenten projects we do hopefully really soon.

The rocks are gone...

The goober this it's pretty funny that I had "rocks" in my tummy.  It was the easiest way to explain it to Sweet Nut and Cute Boy.

Surgery was this morning.  They took me into the OR around 10:40.  I remember switching from the transport bed to the operating table.  They then wrapped my left arm in the sheet under me and kind of tucked it in so it wasn't in the way.  The nurse anesthesiologist kept telling me to put my chin up and I keep putting it down (I was getting the gas by this time and he had put 2 syringes of meds in my iv line on the way to the OR)  He then said the other down and I put it up :D.  That's the last thing I remember until I heard someone keep calling my name and telling me to wake up.

I'm getting over a cold so I had to cough a few times while I was in recovery...that was not fun.  But then they put me on a low dose of oxygen and it's been drying my post nasal drip so I haven't coughed since.  They're letting me keep the oxygen as long as I want.  I figure it's better than more meds at this point.

And my mom and I had a good laugh...as you walk into the ambulatory surgery unit here at the hospital...first thing you see before you get through the entryway is a soda machine and a snack machine.  We joked it was one last bit of torture before you went in, since you can't eat after midnight.  The nurse I had in OR prep said that people complain all the time.

The nurses here have been awesome.  I should be going home sometime tomorrow.  The Goobers will be home on Sunday after the Chef gets home from work.

And Cute Boy will be thrilled that the rocks are gone.  I've been getting yelled at all week for "eating rocks"  He was so cute about it I couldn't correct him, LOL.

Summer Fun...goober style

So, we went on a real vacation two years ago.  The Chef was actually able to get off work and we hit Philly for a week for the Fourth of July.  We all had a great time.  The goobers have been bugging us to go back.  Unfortunately, the Chef's job often throws a wrench into our vacation plans, so we didn't get to go last year.  This year, knowing that Baby Goober was coming at the beginning of June, we decided we would do some staycations planned around weeks spent at the aunt's houses, and camp.

On our list of things to do this summer:

-Sesame Place-we went when we went to Philly and all 3 goobers loved it.  I know that Spawn will only tolerate Sesame Place for so long, so we wanted to go again this year.  Bonus is that we decided to invite the Chef's brother and the Princess...She's a Elmo-obsessed 2 year old.  The same age (give or take a few months) from how old Cute Boy was last time we went.  We can't wait to take her.

-Maritime Aquarium- When we went to Philly we hit Adventure Aquarium and the goober loved it.  We went to Mystic Aquarium last summer and same deal.  So we decided to hit this one this year.  We went yesterday and still a hit with the kids.  They have a robotic dinosaur display going on that the boys loved, as well as a clue hunt.  They had to visit certain exhibits to get the letter clues to find out what the oldest animal in the aquarium was (it was the shark).  They also had the usual aquarium displays, a dino dig, a meercat exhibit...the kids really enjoyed themselves.

-Museum of Natural History-  We went when Spawn was little with my parents...Sweet Nut was either a baby, or not born yet.  I can't remember.  But seeing as we have some dino loving boys right now, we figured this would be a good trip.

-Bronx Zoo-  This is a place we visited ALOT when Golden Boy and I were kids.  Having a dad that was born and raised in the Bronx, he liked to take us there alot.  We've been a few times since the kids have been born.  Last year was the first time the Chef and Cute Boy had been, but we left late and didn't get to see everything we wanted to see.  We're asking the Brother and the Princess if they want to go with us again.

-Stepping Stone Museum-This is a kids museum.  We've been to MidHudson Children's Museum and Please Touch Museum and the kids have had a ball, so we're going to give this one a shot too.  We've heard good things about it, so we're hoping it's as fun as people tell us it is.

-Beach-  We've hit the beach at the lake in the park...and we hit Calf Pasture Beach yesterday after the aquarium.  We really liked it with the exception it was a bit rocky...the water was nice and calm, no huge waves, but it made our feet sore after a bit.  The kids and the Chef had a blast in the water though, and Baby Goober and I chilled under the umbrella.  The beach it self was nice and sandy, but once you got to the water line the stones started.  Seems like most of the beaches we've been to in Connecticut are like that though. They had some picnic tables with umbrellas along the edge of the beach, which is where we parked ourselves.  We're going to buy a  beach umbrella though, we want to hit this and some other beaches this summer.

-Visiting the Aunties.-This is actually happening tomorrow. And I think it's the most looked forward too.  Seriously, Sweet Nut and Cute Boy can't wait to leave.  They've been bugging me all week...and we're ot leaving until lunch time.

And here's some pictures from this week:
from the petting zoo at a local store:
Sweet Nut decided that since Baby Goober wasn't sleeping in the crib, that he would.

The Chef and the Big Goobers had a blast in the water though

So what do you have planned for the rest of your summer?

Sunday, July 10, 2011

One Month already?

Ok, so this is a bit late...at this point Baby Goober is *almost* 6 weeks old...I'm still not sure where the time has gone...

1 month stats:  10 pounds 8 ounces, 22 inches long.

He's starting to be awake more which we all love.  Ad he's getting more vocal, and it's funny to watch.

One Month Old!

He also celebrated his first federal holiday...
not so excited about it.

And he also went to his first fireworks display.

Spawn and Cute Boy were there too.

Spawn loved them, Cute Boy wasn't sure about them but said after that they were awesome and Baby Goober slept through most of them, but did watch them for a bit.

Cute Boy also got his first big boy bike.

Gotta love mornings like these where they all go back to sleep after bringing the Chef to work.

Mostly because I can't usually sleep at night, and it means that I get at least an hour or so of sleep, but it's cute too.

This is what happens though when Mommy is sleeping...Spawn and Cute Boy have a photoshoot...with my cell phone.
It's A Iron Man Mystic Force Ranger.  Just in case you couldn't tell.

And this is sometimes the reason I'm up all night.

But mostly, I'm up just because, and he's sleeping.  But this picture happened during our all nighter the other night...this was at 3:30am...he crashed not long after this.

And we also have explored the beach at the park while the Chef plays soccer.  It's nice because his weekly soccer game starts around dinner time, so we hit the park, and we get the beach almost to ourselves for about an hour until they close it.  Then we have a picnic dinner while he finishes his game.  And then we have exhausted boys who pass out just thinking about their pillows.

So that's what we've been up too.  We're also excited because Sweet Nut comes home from his vacation with his aunt and uncle on Monday...he's been gone for almost 2 weeks...the house hasn't been the same without him.  But he's been having a blast being spoiled by his aunts and hanging out with his cousins.  But he's been missed so we can't wait for him to be home.

We've got alot of doctor appointments this month...physicals for the goobers, plus my 6 week checkup.  Plus we've got some fun things planned.  No vacation this year, but we've got lots of fun stuff within a few hours drive so we're daytripping it this year.  Yay!
